Boat Carrying Over 200 Overturns in River in Assam: Police

There are no reports of any casualties yet.



Chaygaon:  An boat carrying nearly 200 people overturned in river Kolohi in Assam’s Kamrup district today.

The engine of the boat, carrying the passengers from Chaygaon to Champupara to attend a boat race, failed to function in the middle of the river and hit against the post of a bridge, Kamrup (Rural) Deputy Commissioner Vinod Kumar Seshan said.


The details of the casualties are not known yet. There are no reports yet of any passenger being rescued.

The boat overturned with the passengers falling into the river, which was in spate, he said.


The local residents have begun rescue operations and the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF and the State Disaster Response Fund or SDRF personnel have rushed to the spot.


Mr Seshan said many may swam to safety to the other bank of the river, but reports were awaited.


He further said the exact number of passengers traveling in the boat was yet to be ascertained and the local people have only said it was overcrowded.


Senior police officials have rushed to the spot and the hospital authorities nearby have been alerted.
