"Yakub Memon Was Given Ample Opportunity": What Supreme Court Said

New Delhi:  Yakub Memon will hang for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, the Supreme Court ruled early on Thursday after an unprecedented middle of the night hearing.

What Supreme Court judges said:

  1. Yakub Memon was given ample time after rejection of first mercy petition to prepare himself for the last and final meeting with family members and for all other purposes.

  2. Giving 14 days’ time to Memon after the rejection of his mercy plea by President would be a travesty of justice.

  3. We don’t think in a case of this nature, granting further time is necessary.

  4. The rejection of the first mercy petition by the President could have been assailed before this court.

  5. After the court rejected Memon’s petition, the government’s top lawyer said: “I have done my job. Not about victory. It is a legal process.”
