Heavy Rain in Varanasi, Where PM Narendra Modi Will Address Rally Today

Varanasi:  It is raining heavily this morning in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to land this afternoon on a day-long visit of his Lok Sabha constituency.

At the DLW ground, where PM Modi is scheduled to make a public address, frantic efforts are being made to pump out rain water that is fast filling the massive ground. Last seen, the rain had the upper hand.

PM Modi’s rally at the same venue scheduled for June 28 had to be cancelled because heavy rain had left the grounds waterlogged. This time, better arrangements have reportedly made under the supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Power Grid Corporation of India was asked to erect a special waterproof pandal at the venue. Three special technicians were called in from New Delhi and a large number of workers worked round the clock to prepare the venue for the PM’s visit, said Sanjay Bhardwaj, a BJP functionary.

A special floor has been made  by first laying bricks and then covering them with plywood, he said, adding water pumps had been installed to meet contingencies. Those water pumps are being put to use right now.

The venue has been prepared to seat 25,000 people.

The PM will land at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Babatpur, about 18 km northwest of Varanasi, in a special plane at about 3 pm. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav – who skipped Wednesday’s meeting called by the PM in Delhi to discuss the land acquisition bill – will greet the PM at the airport, as will Governor Ram Naik.

PM Modi will today also give the go-ahead for the four-laning of the Varanasi-Babatpur Road and lay the foundation stone of a Ring Road for the city. He will lay foundation stones for two power sub-stations at Chowk and Kazzakpura.

Several union ministers will be present along with the Prime Minister.
