This is the biggest thing to have happened this year to revenue-impoverished Bollywood, in the absence of Khan-sized blockbusters that collect 100 crores within a few days of release, or even any blockbuster at all.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns will likely home-deliver Bollywood’s first 100 crores of 2015. Deepika Padukone’s Piku, with over 100 crores worldwide of which 75 crores came from the home box office, is the other bright spot in an otherwise dull year, with Akshay Kumar’s Gabbar Is Back.
Tanu Weds Manu, directed by Aanand L Rai, stars Kangana in two roles and R Madhavan as the male lead. Apart from generating revenues, it has also been warmly received by critics with Kangana’s performance as the rustic tomboyish Datto being singled out for much of the praise.
Bollywood will be looking to director Zoya Akhtar’s ensemble film Dil Dhadakne Do to keep its fortunes upwardly mobile next week. There are also several big films scheduled for later this year, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback vehicle Jazbaa, Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, and Shah Rukh’s Dilwale reunion with Kajol.
